Japanese IME for HTC Desire

You want to write in Japanese on your HTC Desire, but you do not want to flash to original Softbank X06HT ROM?
There are several solutions on the market for Japanese keyboards, but I prefer the original HTC one from the Softbank ROM. So I got my hands on a Softbank ROM with the update to Android 2.2 and extracted everything needed for the keyboard.
There is a step-by-step instruction for the installation somewhere on the internet, but I wanted something easier, so I created a signed ZIP file that you can flash from recovery mode. You can find the file on my downloads page.

To install the keyboard, copy the iWNN-IME.zip file to your SDcard, boot into recovery mode and flash the file from there.

There are other solutions on the market that you can just install.
Japanese IME Kaede IME V3
OpenWnn plus (more or less the same than the Softbank IME)
Simeji
Graffiti for Android

You can switch between latin IME, number input and Japanese input with the lower left button.

Once in Japanese input mode you type and see the Katakana in the input field and the Kanji proposals below.

strange, it works for me. when you press ?? you toggle between ?, A and 1. Which means between hiragana/kanji, romanji and numbers. When ? is highlighted and I type hi then I get the suggestion for ?.
Let me try to install a ROM without the iWNN keyboard and try my mod again.

      Hassan,

I am sorry, I do not have this problem. Sorry if this question sounds stupid, but when u type ??

      Hassan,

I am sorry, I do not have this problem. Sorry if this question sounds stupid, but when u type ?? is above the keyboard the list with the predictions popping up? If not, maybe you have to activate Word Prediction for iWnn IME. To do this, go to your home screen, press menu button, got to Settings, then to “Language & keyboard”, then to “iWnn IME”, scroll down until you see “Word Prediction” and make sure the checkbox is checked, activate as well “Typing Error Correction” and “Wildcard Prediction”. With these settings I get the Kanji in the prediction window.
      Hope this helps.

ah man i did terrible thing to install custom theme and app and my rom is gone anwyay i installed ur rom now rc5.like to ask about APN settings.till now i used username as opensoftbank.are you sure about your settings in apn?like for softbankx06ht.
what are the differences between three apns you added in rom?are the safe?i mean i m using shihodai package.if anything goes wrong bill will be big u know.

Hope you are happy with AdamG’s ROM. I do not make this ROM, I am just adding some stuff that is usefull for Japan. The ROM still has some minor bugs, like the video camera is not working yet.

      About the APN:
APN 1 = Softbank Internet is the one I use for my business SIM card, I do not know the name of the plan, but this is a unlimited internet flatrate that my company gets from Softbank
APN 2 = Softbank(open) are exactly the settings you used before with the username opensoftbank.
APN 3 = Softbank(smile.world) is for the unlimited plan that you get when you buy an iPhone (with black SIM) from Softbank. That is the one I am using at the moment (the iPhone went to my son in Germany)

If you were happy with your phone bill, stay with the one you have used, the Softbank(open).
APN 2 and 3 are not working with my business SIM card.
APN 1 and 2 are not working with my iPhone SIM card (in my Desire).

So I guess, for you APN 1 and 3 will not work.
Hope this helps a little bit.

    Thanks for your reply.
yeah besides vid cam bug everything is fine.i like keyboard options you provided.its RC(release candidate) so when stable version is expected?

    • beegee1962

Final release is not published. At the moment AdamG releases about 1 RC per week, each time its getting better.
You can get more informations from xda-developers.

If you want something real stable and fast, you can try as well the V 1.0.4 of his ROM.

  • hassan

what about navigation?i used brut navigation its fast and stable.why you dont add navigation too in rom?

  • hassan

ah stopwatch etc are missing too.can i use 2.2 version .apk for that?or i need to install some other apps for it?weather too is not present like 2.2 where you can controll weather, world clock, stop watch etc/

  • beegee1962

I didn’t use google maps/navigation before, not much need for this for me. I have NavDroid installed, but thats not free.
For the weather, world clock, stop watch, that are HTC applications and they are not working on this ROM unfortunately.

If you need HTC apps, then you can try Noonski N.S.A ROM . It is based on 2.2 and has most HTC apps running.

Or you search on xda-developers Desire ROM forum for another ROM with HTC apps. There are a couple of them.

I can easily make a version with the same Softbank Japan mods from this.

  • hassan

i will try to install that.but biggest problem was Japanese keyboard but i love this rom.besides few hiccups everything is perfect really love it.
and really thanks to you for your support really appreciated.
    Kindest regards,

For a replacement of HTC apps, check my apps list on AppBrain (you can see it in the footer of this page). Nearly everything that HTC offers is available from someone else on the market.

    • beegee1962

Hassan, I am sorry, but I have no experience in modding or creating apps/widgets on Android. All I do here is collecting solutions and bring them together.

  • hassan

Ah.ok never mind thanks for reply.

Hi, I know this is an old post but I’m trying to get a decent Japanese IME on my new Sensation and figured it was worth a shot to try the Desire IME. But I can’t flash your zip file. CWM tells me:

“Amend scripting (update-script) is no longer supported. Amend scripting was deprecated by Google in Android 1.5. It was necessary to remove it when upgrading to the ClockworkMod 3.0 Gingerbread based recovery. Please switch to Edify scripting (updater-script and update-binary) to create working update zip packages. Installation aborted.”

Is there any other way for me to try installing this? I assume it’s not as easy as just putting iWnnIME.apk in the system/app folder using Root Explorer…

    • beegee1962

I am sorry, but I did not update the installation script to the new version.

      What you can do:
      1) unpack the downloaded ZIP file, you will see 2 folders: “META-INF” and “system”
      2) copy the system folder to your sd-card
      3) get Root-Explorer
      4) copy the content of system on your sd-card to the system folder on your internal memory
      5) reboot
      6) check if iWNN is available as input method

    Hello!

Do you have real Emoji with this keyboard?
I’m thinking about getting an unlocked Galaxy S2 from Hong Kong, so I’m looking for a nice Japanese keyboard which could support Emoji compatible with iPhone…

    Thank you in advance.

    • beegee1962

      Hello,

Yes, you get the same Emoji as you would get on the Softbank Android phones.
