Disappointed from ROM Manager, which only really works if you pay money for it, I was looking for an alternative to give users the possibility to download my ROM’s, create nandroid backups and flash my ROM’s.
I found the ROM Updater from elegos => [APP] [1.14 @ 14/Feb/2011] ROM Updater. which is ad-free, open source and had all the functions I wanted to give to the users of my ROM.
With the agreement of Giacomo (Thank you!) I made some changes to the source code and will publish the BeeGee ROM Updater with my ROM’s. The source code is published on GitHub. If you want to use the ROM Updater with my existing ROM’s you can get it from the download section here. If you like the ROM Updater please donate to Giacomo, as he created the basis for my personalized application!
You use this application on your own risk! I am not responsible if you break your device, loose warranty, get into a fight with your wife or loose important company data from your SDcard.
You have the options:
- Check for updates
- Download files
- Wipe cache
- Wipe data
- Backup the ROM
- Restore a ROM backup
- Reboot into Recovery
There should be nothing here to change. In case you want to change the default folder for the nandroid backups, you can change it here. This is not recommended, as CWM recovery searches for backups only in this default folder.
In case you want to use the application for other ROM repositories, you can change the path to the repository here as well.
You select the version you want to install (or download) and the download will start. Once the download is finished, you can choose if you want to flash the ROM with or without wiping your data and creating a backup of your current ROM. The back button cancels the actions, but the downloaded ROM will be available in the Downloaded files section.
Here you can see all the ROM’s that you downloaded in the past and delete or flash them to your tablet. The ROM’s that you have downloaded will be stored on your SDcard in the folder 1ROM. You can put there as well other ROM files and flash them with this application.
It is essential that you create backups from time to time. You never know when a faulty application crashes your tablet and you loose your data. With this option it is easy to create nandroid backups, which are a full copy of your current ROM, data and settings. The backups are stored on your SDcard in the folder clockworkmod/backup. The backups have the name <year>-<month>-<day>-<hour>.<minute> e.g. 2011-06-11-11.21.
Of course you need a possibility to restore your backup in case something went wrong. This is done with the restore function. It will show you a list of the backups available in the clockwork/backup folder of your SDcard. If you tap on one of the backups you can either delete the backup, restore the backup or cancel.
These options will reboot into CWM recovery and clear up your cache or data. Be carefull with this, as it will delete installed applications, settings and stored data from your tablet.
This boots into the CWM recovery menu and gives you the possibility to perfom recovery actions from there.
Ok, that was a quick overview of the functions of BeeGee’s ROM Updater, based on the work of elegos. Hope it is usefull for you and you enjoy its functions and my ROMs.
